If the monotony of your walls just can't be saved with a fresh coat of paint, use decorative wall frame panels to add dimension and style to your interior design. Wall frame panels are made of strips of molding to create closed frames along your wall. Wall frame panels are commonly accompanied by chair rails, but the limits of wall frame molding are restricted only by your imagination and your budget.

    Multiple Colors

    • Wall frame panels designate closed spaces to add color to your walls without treating the entire wall space. Construct a series of symmetrical square or rectangular wall frames with simple mitered joint molding. Placing the panels on the bottom half of the wall prevents the room from feeling cluttered or smaller than it is. One color option for molding is to paint the molding strips but leave the interior of the panel the same color as the wall. White molding is a standard color, but bolder choices like navy or mint green are also elegant ways to incorporate color into the room. For an even more dramatic color effect, paint the interior of the wall frames a contrasting or complementary color of the wall color. For a subtle color distinction, opt for the same color as the wall but a shade lighter or darker. For a more dramatic effect, choose a contrasting color for the interior of the panel; pair blue walls with orange panels or gray walls with bold pink panel interiors.

    Bold Textures

    • Though color adds a visual distinction to a wall frame panel, texture is a more unexpected way to distinguish your wall frame panels. If you have painted walls, choose a wallpaper for the interior of your wall panels rather than flat paint; wallpapers in simple colors but bold textures, like faux wood, faux stone or ribbing, are effective and dramatic without being distracting. Hardware stores that sell paint often sell paint mediums that mix into regular wall paint or apply after a single coat to add texture of finishing effects. Opt for sand, crackle or suede finishes for an unexpected visual impact.

    Accent Walls

    • Wall frame panels aren't just for simple rows along the bottom of your wall. A single wall covered in a pattern or grid of differently sized and shaped panels is a dramatic addition to a formal dining room or sophisticated sitting room. Accent walls covered in panels are particularly effective in rooms with vaulted or cathedral ceilings. To avoid a distracting or cluttered appearance, match both the individual molding strips and the interior of the panels to the original wall color; the final effect is more textural than visual. Another option is to choose molding strips in a high-sheen metallic like silver or gold to resemble classic Victorian portrait frames.
