How to Make a Portfolio Using Poster Board
- 1). Measure the dimensions of your largest piece of art. Note that a portfolio caddy is only appropriate for moving flat art such as drawings, photographs and watercolor paintings. Thicker pieces of art, even oil or acrylic paintings, can be damaged when carried in a portfolio.
- 2). Cut two pieces of poster board. Each piece must be 2 inches longer than its corresponding dimension on your largest piece of art. For example, a portfolio to carry a 10-inch by 8-inch piece should be at minimum 12-inch by 10-inch.
- 3). Lay the two pieces of posterboard together with two of their long edges touching. Lay as strip of duct or craft tape along the entire length of the seam.
- 4). Close the posterboard pieces together like the cover of a book, the taped side on the inside of the fold. Run a strip of tape along the outside of the taped edge. This will have three distinct faces, again like the spine of a book.
- 5). Cut a 1-inch wide, 5-inch long hole through both pieces of posterboard at the center of the open long edges of the board. This will serve as a handle while you carry your portfolio.
- 6). Open your finished portfolio and set your art carefully inside. Close the portfolio to carry. If you're carrying only a few pieces, the portfolio should stay closed on its own. If it's thick enough that you can see a gap between the pieces, tape the short ends shut with a short strip of tape on each end.
