How to Care for Staghorn Fern
- 1). Hang your staghorn fern in an area that receives partial sunlight or dappled shade, such as under a tree or on a patio.
- 2). Water the moss underneath the fern when the bottom of the moss feels dry to the touch or when the fronds begin to wilt slightly. Water the moss thoroughly one to two times a week except for in cool or cloudy weather, when once-weekly watering is usually sufficient.
- 3). Fertilize staghorn fern once a month throughout the spring and summer when the plant is actively growing, and every two months throughout winter. Apply a soluble 10-10-10 analysis fertilizer at the rate listed on the label.
- 4). Move the fern indoors during periods of freezing weather. Place the staghorn fern in a garage, inside the home or in another protected area that stays above freezing.
- 5). Transplant the fern to a new mount when the base fronds reach the edges of the staghorn fern's current mount. Choose a mount that is 6 inches larger than the current mount. Place a mound of sphagnum moss on the center of the new mount, then set the staghorn on top the moss. Tie the fern to the moss with garden twine to secure it.
