- 3). Prepare hanging supplies. There are various clips you can use to hang Christmas lights, depending on where you wish to hang them. These include gutter clips and shingle clips. Some homeowners just use small nails as support for the lights.
- 4). Test the lights. It is best to test the lights before you hang them to ensure that they work. If there is a problem, you can make the adjustments easily while on the ground.
- 5). Plan your design with your electrical outlets in mind. Find out how many lights you can plug in safely. Check the capacity of the outlet as well as the power required for each string of light.
- 6). Install the clips or nails at strategic points and appropriate intervals following your design. You may need to have a helper support the ladder and hand you the supplies.
- 7). String the lights on the roof or around the windows, placing them on the supporting nails, hooks or clips.
