How to Dread Coarse Hair

    • 1). Section the hair into 1 to 2-inch squares, using small rubber bands to hold each section in place and a comb to separate the hair into even sections. Start at the forehead and move towards the neck to keep loose hair out of your way while you work.

    • 2). Backcomb each section of hair using a dread comb. Comb towards the scalp, starting at the root of the hair sections and moving to the ends. You may leave the rubber bands in place to hold the dreads into place. If you remove the rubber bands and the hair falls loose at the roots, you may replace the bands anytime without difficulty. Rub the dreadlock roots against the scalp in a clockwise motion to help lock the hair at the roots into place and avoid loose hairs in this location.

    • 3). Secure the ends of each dread with a second, small rubber band. Use clear rubber bands or bands in colors that match the hair to disguise the bands.

    • 4). Apply petroleum-free dread wax to each lock to hold the hair together and help the dreads reach maturity faster.
