Directions for Butterfly Centerpieces

    Tissue Paper Butterflies

    • 1). Obtain tissue paper in several colors and patterns. Choose colors to match the theme of your décor.

    • 2). Fold paper in half and cut a wing shape so when it is opened, it becomes a set of wings.

    • 3). Twist a pipe cleaner over the center of the wings to form the body of the butterfly. Thread a length of pipe cleaner 2 inches long through the top of the butterfly and twist to create the head and antennae. Glue each butterfly to a thin dowel rod or bamboo skewer.

    • 4). Paint a thin layer of craft paint or glitter paint on the wings to enhance if desired. Allow to dry.

    • 5). Place a small square of florist's foam down in a terra cotta pot. "Plant" your butterflies down in the foam, interspersing with silk or homemade flowers if desired. Substitute a glass vase or other container to hold your creations if desired.

    Butterfly Tree

    • 1). Choose a tree branch that has several small, sturdy twigs strong enough to hold hanging objects.

    • 2). Find pictures of real butterflies in magazines or on web sites. Search for butterflies that have full bodies and opened wings. Scan them into your computer or download them into a desktop editing program. Resize the butterfly pictures so they will be less than 4 inches in width and length.

    • 3). Fasten sheets of white tissue paper to regular printing paper with tape. Place the sheets in your printer with the tissue paper facing up. Print the butterflies in full color. You may have to do a few test runs before getting the desired results.

    • 4). Remove the tissue paper sheets from the printing paper. Carefully cut out each butterfly shape. Fold each butterfly in half at the center so that you can't see the blank white side that is not printed. Use a needle to poke a small hole in the center of each body and insert a thread for hanging.

    • 5). Place a piece of florist's foam into a terra cotta pot or a glass vase with a wide mouth. Insert tree branch into center of the foam. Hang butterflies from the twigs on the tree branch.
