How to Make a Cotton Jacket Soft by Washing It
- 1). Turn the washing machine to the warm water setting, normal cycle and the smallest load type. Throw your jacket into the machine and add 1 tbsp. liquid laundry soap to the washer. Any more will leave behind a residue that will stiffen the cotton fibers.
- 2). Allow the machine to run until you reach the final rinse. Open the washer and add 1 cup vinegar. The vinegar will not only soften the cotton but also remove any lingering odors.
- 3). Turn the machine back on and allow it to finish its final cycles. Once complete, turn the machine back onto the final rinse cycle. A second final rinse will help remove any remaining detergent residue from the coat.
- 4). Remove the coat from the washing machine and throw it into the dryer with a single dryer ball. Dryer balls are available at grocery stores and work by gently beating the cotton fibers, causing them to become softer without the use of chemicals.
- 5). Turn the dryer onto a low setting and allow the coat to dry completely.
