What Is an Inactive Thyroid?
- When the thyroid slows down or becomes inactive, the body slows down as well. Hypothyroidism causes fatigue and weakness. If not treated properly, hypothyroidism can cause a heart attack or stroke.
- Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a disease that causes the immune system to attack the thyroid tissue. The thyroid then slows down and eventually shuts down. Other causes of hypothyroidism are associated with age.
- Early symptoms of hypothyroidism can go undetected and be mistaken for other ailments. Symptoms include fatigue, depression, weakness, brittle nails and hair, feeling extremely cold, constipation and memory loss.
- Simple blood tests will determine if the thyroid is slow or inactive. A doctor will prescribe medication to treat hypothyroidism. The medication will need to be taken continuously, and routine checkups will be necessary to ensure proper dosage.
- The thyroid should be tested if there is a family history of thyroid problems. Pregnant women and women older than 60 should be aware of the symptoms.
