    What Are Nosebleeds and Sinusitis?

    • The Children's Hospital of Boston states a nosebleed is when the blood vessels inside the front part of the nose are damaged. Sinusitis is an infection near the nose.

    Causes

    • According to the Children's Hospital of Boston, a nosebleed can be caused by many factors, including nose picking, injury or overly dry air. Sinusitis is an infection of the sinuses caused by upper-respiratory infections or the common cold.

    Identification

    • The Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters states sinusitis symptoms include runny nose with discharge lasting longer than seven to 10 days, facial discomfort and fever. Nosebleeds produce blood from the front part of the nose.

    Treatment

    • Sinusitis treatment ranges from antibiotics to sinus surgery. A nosebleed treatment is to pinch the nostrils together and have the child lean forward so as not to swallow blood.

    Prevention/Solution

    • The Children's Hospital of Boston states teaching children not to pick their nose and applying petroleum jelly to the inside of their nostrils help prevent nosebleeds.
