Polishing Floorboards

    • 1). Push a large barrel sander diagonally across the floor from one corner of the room to the opposite corner to remove all paint, stains and dirt. Move with the sander at a consistent speed, keeping the sanding drum off the floor until it is on full speed. Once you reach the wall, tilt the drum off the floor, turn the machine around, and begin the next row.

    • 2). Sand hard-to-reach areas with an edge sander. Press the edge sander down lightly on the floor, guiding it in a circular motion across the floorboards. Go over the floorboards twice with the machine, first with course-grain sandpaper, and then with fine sandpaper.

    • 3). Scrape the corners of the floor, using a scraper with a new sharp blade. Move the scraper back and forth over the floorboards with the grain of the wood.

    • 4). Sand the floor again with the fine-grade sandpaper. Move the sandpaper back and forth with the grain of the wood.

    • 5). Apply the first coat of wood sealer to the edges of the floorboard, using a quality paintbrush. Use a lamb's wool applicator to apply the wood sealer to the rest of the floor, working quickly with the grain of the wood.

    • 6). Apply another coat of wood sealer to the floorboards. Allow the sealer to cure for 48 hours before moving furniture into the room.
