How to Replace the Pull Cord on a Poulan 131 Pro

    • 1). Use the screwdriver to loosen the screws that hold the starter cover in place. The starter cover is on the same side as the pull cord. Remove the starter cover.

    • 2). Draw the starter cord out of the pulley. Use the small screwdriver to pop off the center clip in the pulley that looks like a cube.

    • 3). Pull the starter cord through the hole in the pulley's center that's now exposed underneath the center cube.

    • 4). Thread the new starter cord all the way through the same hole you just pulled the old cord out of. Push the cube back into place over the new starter cord.

    • 5). Remove the metal insert inside the plastic handle by pulling it out with the screwdriver. Untie the knot on the cord and take off the old cord from the insert. Discard the old cord.

    • 6). Thread the new cord through the hole on the starter cover, handle and metal insert. Tie a loose overhand knot at the cord's end and pull it into the insert. Make sure the knot doesn't tighten before it is inside the metal insert.

    • 7). Pull the knot tight and put the metal insert back into the plastic handle. Wind the cord onto the pulley. Don't worry if it's tight yet.

    • 8). Tension the recoil spring by pulling out the cord two full turns and wind it back into the pulley. Fit the starter cover back over the saw and use the screwdriver to tighten the screws.
