How to Clear Tree Stumps

    • 1). Remove as much of the tree as you can, using a saw. Clear the broken boughs and brush from the lawn so you have a clear space in which to work.

    • 2). Cut away much of what remains with the saw until you have one upright portion of the tree left.

    • 3). Dig about a foot or more around the stump, using a spade. Digging too closely to the stump will make removal of the stump more difficult. Continue digging down until you reach some of the roots. Dig all the way around the tree stump, forming a circle.

    • 4). Insert the landscape bar into the hole and beneath the stump. Pull down on the lever, loosening the hold the roots have on the ground. Continue doing this all the way around the stump.

    • 5). Soak the ground beneath the stump with a hose if root removal is difficult. Allow the water to soak into the soil and work the lever again.

    • 6). Cut any exposed roots with the saw if you cannot loosen the roots.

    • 7). Work the lever some more beneath the stump and work it free.
