Garage Shelving Options

    Wood Shelving

    • Wood shelving is one storage option that is perfect for small garages. The material is lightweight, available in a variety of sizes and styles and cut to fit just about any space. Wood shelving has a few drawbacks, like swaying in the middle and wood rot. To store heavy items, purchase a thicker-grade wood to prevent swaying. To stop wood rot, seal with a wood sealer and try to keep moisture to a minimum in your garage.

    Acrylic Shelving

    • Acrylic or plastic shelving is another garage storage option. Acrylic and resin shelving is attractive and will give your garage a cleaner look. The fasteners and shelving can support small to medium items. For heavier items, place those on bottom shelves and build up. Acrylic shelving won't rot and doesn't sway easily if items are placed properly.

    Adjustable Shelving

    • One popular garage shelving option is adjustable shelving. Sometimes called railing shelving, these shelves are mounted on rails that are attached on the walls of your garage. Adjustable shelves can be moved up or down and can be custom made for specific areas of your garage. Generally made out of steel, adjustable shelving is strong---it can hold heavy equipment, supplies and even car engines. Most adjustable shelving is covered in a plastic coating to make it resistant to rusting.

    Wire Shelving

    • The most popular garage shelving option is wire shelving. Not only are the shelves strong and durable, but are adjustable as well. These are perfect for placing items on the top as well as hanging items on the wires. The shelving works best for items that are not small. If placing small items on wire shelving, place them in a container then on the shelf. Wire shelving is usually covered in a plastic coating to prevent rusting and can be custom designed to fit into any garage environment.
