How to Build Fireplace Cabinets

    • 1). Plan and sketch your designs on paper. When determining dimensions, measure the firebox on all three sides and add 3/4 inch to each dimension. If the room has a high ceiling, you should aim to build a larger mantel.

    • 2). Use a level to measure and mark the dimensions of the legs for the cabinet on the wall. Cut and install the back of the legs that form the cabinet. Have the legs extend from the bottom of the shelf to the floor.

    • 3). Secure the sides and front of the cabinet legs with nails. You can also use glue to secure the wood pieces. Sand the edges of the legs with sandpaper or a router. Mark the framing above the mounted legs for the horizontal board. Measure, cut and install the cleats and furring strips, depending on the thickness of your cabinet.

    • 4). Find the center of where you want to place the horizontal board. Clamp a triangle-shaped piece of scrap wood. Bend another piece of wood over the triangle point, resting it at the top of both legs to form an arc. Cut out the arc with a jigsaw, and sand it once cut. Install the board over the furring strips once level.

    • 5). Measure and cut the fireplace cabinet shelf, and nail it to the wall. Use wedge-shaped blocks to secure the shelf from underneath. Attach molding around the cabinet shelf.

    • 6). Finish the fireplace cabinet by using wood putty to fill nail holes. Sand the wood putty smooth, then prime and paint, or stain, the mantel.
