Stull Cemetery has earned the nickname "The Gates of Hell" because the Devil would allegedly appear there on Spring equinox and on Halloween. A number of eerie stories and legends are told about the graveyard.

- Strange lights are said to appear around the unmarked grave of a boy who was the Devil's own half-human child. According to the urban legend, the boy was a shape-shifter who was chained beneath his house since he was an infant. He one day escaped by chewing off his own hand, then went on an 11-month killing spree in town before he himself was killed.
- Legends say the the Devil has been appearing in the cemetery since the 1850s and the curious have been known to hang out there on the Spring equinox and Halloween to see if Ol' Scratch shows up.
