How to Switch Out a Ceiling Fan

    Remove Old Ceiling Fan

    • 1). Locate the circuit breaker or fuse box in your basement or utility room and turn off the breaker switch to the room where you will be working. Turn the ceiling fan switch on the wall or the ceiling fan itself on and off a few times to make sure the power to the fixture is off. Unscrew any light bulbs and set them aside. Remove decorative fixtures or shades by removing the screws.

    • 2). Take out the mounting bolts (nuts or screws) that are attaching the ceiling fan to the ceiling using either a screwdriver or an adjustable wrench. Take the wire caps off the electrical wires. Test the wire connections with a voltage tester to confirm the wiring is dead. Mark the wires as you are separating them with a piece of tape so you'll be able to reconnect appropriately later.

    • 3). Lower the ceiling fan to the floor. Check out the braces that secured the existing fixture for damage and to ensure it is suitable for the new installation. If the braces won't work for your replacement fan, insert a 2-inch-by-4-inch piece of wood between the joists in the ceiling and secure with screws.

    Install New Ceiling Fan

    • 1). Pull the house wiring from the ceiling through the center of the ceiling mounting plate and secure with screws. Climb down the ladder and look at the ceiling mounting plate from different spots in the room to see if it appears level and if it is not, add a couple of washers between the ceiling mounting plate and the electrical conduit box.

    • 2). Connect the rubber mount that is on the ceiling fan motor to the mounting plate in the ceiling with the hooks or fasteners provided. Connect the ceiling and motor green wire to the ceiling's ground wire or ground screw. Attach the other wiring from the ceiling to the motor. For example, connect black to black and white to white, and secure with wire caps.

    • 3). Attach the blades of the ceiling fan to the ceiling fan's blade brackets with a screwdriver and the screws provided. Pull the wires on the motor through the motor cover. Connect the cover to the ceiling plate and tighten the screws.

    • 4). Pull the motor control wires through the base plate. Fasten the base plate to the lower part of the motor and secure with screws. Connect the motor control plug to the motor plug on the ceiling fan. Attach the housing of the motor to the motor control's unit base plate. Secure with screws. Turn on the circuit breaker or fuse box and test for proper functioning.
