How to Control Tree Branches with Patio Pavers
- 1). Select thick upright branches that are still somewhat flexible. These should be evenly spaced around the tree.
- 2). Throw one end of the burlap over the branch, near the tip. Allow it to fall to the other side. Pull the burlap so the two ends are even. This burlap sling acts as a cushion, to protect the branch from being cut by the weight of the pavers.
- 3). Tie a rope around the upper part of the burlap sling.
- 4). Place two or three pavers in the bag and tie the two loose ends of the rope around the top of the bag. Secure it well with a tight knot.
- 5). Stand back and inspect the aspect of the branch. You may need to attach more than one paver to weigh the branch down to where you want it. Too much weight will break the branch. Add or remove pavers from the bag so the branch is bending slightly more horizontally.
- 6). Add more bags of pavers, in the same manner, every 12 inches toward the trunk. Remove pavers from the bags if it appears the branch is too heavily weighted.
- 7). Repeat the procedure for each scaffolding branch you wish to train.
- 8). Allow the weights to remain on the branch for two or three seasons, until the branch is growing at a 45-degree angle. Older, woodier branches will take longer to train than flexible branches.
