Candy Wrapper Weaving Project
- Cut and smooth the candy wrappers so they are almost equal lengths on all sides and can be folded easily. Clean these cut wrappers of any residual chocolate or pieces of candy before you start constructing designs with them. Candy wrappers made out of thicker paper are better then the ones which are made out of more fragile thin shiny pieces of cellophane. Fold the wrappers in half lengthwise and then again lengthwise, creating a long strip of wrapper to use for the project. When you first start out doing this, making smaller things like bracelets or coin purses are the best projects. As you become more skilled at folding, you can attempt larger purses or bags.
- These long candy wrapper strips can be hooked around each other and woven together in a cross-section pattern, or whatever pattern you choose, to create a bag or purse or bracelet. To ensure strength and stability of something large like a purse woven out of candy wrappers, add a small amount of glue to each folded area. You can also wrap the candy wrappers around a thicker, folded piece of recycled paper.
For a simple design like a bracelet, simply take the wrappers and fold then in half lengthwise and then fold the ends into the middle, repeating the steps until you have a thick piece of paper folded over itself which you can bend into a "V" with the top parts folded down to the middle of the main middle fold. Make a number of these V shapes. Then take the feet of one V and slip it through the crease in another V's legs. Continue to make these V's and hook them together so that one interlocks with the other. You can double them up per V as well, making the design thicker. Once the series of interconnected V's are as long as your hand, connect them at opposite ends, forming a candy wrapper bracelet. You can now glue any areas that seem loose, or all areas that have been folded. - Once your candy wrapper weaving project has been fully woven and constructed, the wrappers can be painted and decorated to your liking. Spray paint will add weight and more stability to your creation. Use matte spray paint, so that there is a dull shine and finish on the outside of the bag. If you become really skilled at making these weaving projects, using only specific colors and styles of candy wrappers will naturally color and decorate the bag so that you won't have to paint it at all, as the original designs and colors on the wrappers will color it naturally.
