Hardwood Floor Vs. Tile Flooring
- Wood can come in several different types, such as oak, hickory, and walnut, while tile can be ceramic, vinyl, porcelain and natural stone.
- Wood typically falls in the range of $8 to $12 per square foot. Depending on the type of tile, tile prices can start as low as $1 per square foot and go as high as $20.
- Because wood is vulnerable to moisture and may warp or split when exposed to water, it is a poor choice for bathrooms or kitchens. Tile is better at handling water, but can chip easily if it lacks stable installation or if hard objects are dropped on it.
- While tile floors are easier to maintain overall, they are difficult to repair if damaged, while a wood floor can be refinished to remove unsightly blemishes.
- Vinyl tiles are very easy to install and require only peeling off the protective cover and putting the tile in place, while other tiles must be mortared and grouted; natural stone tiles may be best laid by professionals. Most wood floor installations require the assistance of a professional, unless the floor is installed as a floating floor.
