How to Get Rid of the Smell in Stinky Jeans

    • 1). Address the odor problem quickly. As soon as you discover a smell on your jeans, act on it. The longer the smell remains (especially if they are moldy), the harder it is to get the smell out.

    • 2). Brush off anything that may be causing the smell on your jeans. Use an old hairbrush to remove mold, food or any other type of dirt that is visible.

    • 3). Pre-treat your jeans by adding 2 tbsp. of ammonia to each cup of water. Let the jeans soak for an hour.

    • 4). Purchase a bottle of white distilled vinegar and pour a few cups in your washing machine. Wash the jeans using the hottest setting. This will open up the fibers so the vinegar can neutralize the odor. Repeat the process until the smell is gone.

    • 5). Wash your jeans again with regular laundry detergent to remove the vinegar smell.

    • 6). Set your jeans outside to dry. Make sure they are completely dry before putting them away so they don’t become musty.

    • 7). Purchase a mildewcide – a product that deals with mold or mildew contamination, to remove any remaining odors. Read the label first as the chemicals can be harmful if not used properly.

    • 8). Spray your jeans with an odor removing spray when you are pressed for time and can't wash them. These sprays can be purchased at any grocery, drug or discount store. Remember that this is a temporary fix and sometimes it may just cover up the smells with the product’s aroma.
