Maytag Washer Won't Drain

    • 1). Empty the pockets on clothing before you place it in the washer. Small items that exit from the pockets during a wash cycle can get caught in the pump, which causes the washer not to be able to drain as well as it should.

    • 2). Select the proper washing cycle for the garment you are washing. Generally speaking, those cycles that have a lower spin speed are less successful at removing water from the appliance. Select a higher spin speed for better results.

    • 3). Do not overload the washer so that it is packed with clothing. Also, do not place an imbalanced load in the washer in which one side of the drum is much more full than the other side. Either of these things keeps the washer from spinning and draining correctly.

    • 4). Do not wash only one item at a time. This causes an imbalance and results in the washer not being able to perform an optimal spin and drain cycle.

    • 5). Do not tape the drain hose over the drain opening. This hose should be unrestricted so that water can freely flow from it. Also, make sure that the drain hose is not more than 96 inches off the floor, as this makes it difficult for water to exit the hose.

    • 6). If your washer's owner's manual calls for HE detergent, use only HE detergent. Using normal detergent can stop or slow the spinning and draining cycles.
