How to Do Hair Like Diana Ross
A Volume-Enhancing Cut
Diana Ross' haircut allows her curls to maintain their shape without being heavy. Have your stylist cut your hair to shoulder length with layers that become shorter towards the top. If you have naturally curly hair, your hair can be razor-cut for an uneven finish. Have your hair cut dry so that your stylist can work with your natural curl pattern. If you have straight hair, have your hair cut while wet for bouncier curls.
Get the Look With Heat
If you don't have naturally curly hair, imitate Ross' ringlets with the help of some styling tools. Wash your hair and allow it to air dry to avoid smoothing out any texture. Smooth a quarter-sized amount of anti-frizz serum from mid-lengths to the ends. Divide your hair into 1-inch sections, and pin each section to your head. Remove the section closest to the bottom, and wrap it around a 1-inch curling wand from root to tip away from your face. Hold it against the iron for 10 seconds for thick hair, and five seconds for fine hair, before releasing and pinning the curl to your head. Repeat on your entire head and allow the curls to cool for 15 minutes. Remove the clips and spritz with a medium-hold hairspray.
Enhance Natural Curls Without Heat
Work with your natural hair texture to imitate Ross' look if you have curly or wavy hair. Wash your hair and gently towel dry the ends. Smooth a dime-sized amount of leave-in conditioner through the ends, and comb hair from root to tip with a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute product. Allow your hair to air dry until 50 percent dry. Spritz hair from root to tip with a spray gel and use your fingertips to scrunch hair upwards into curls.
Pamper Your Locks
Treat your locks to encourage natural curls and help the style to last longer. Wash your hair once a week if you have thick coarse hair, and twice a week for curly or wavy hair. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to avoid drying out curls. If you have straight hair, try washing every other day with a volumizing shampoo and smoothing conditioner. Use a hydrating hair mask once a week to add shine and shape to curls, and replenish after using hot tools. Make your own mask at home by smoothing oil over your hair and leaving it on under a shower cap overnight. Use olive oil for fine, oily or straight hair, and coconut oil for thick curls and coarse hair. Wash your hair in the morning for more manageable tresses.
