How to Troubleshoot a Non-working Ice Maker
- 1). Verify that the ice maker is switched on. Refrigerator controls usually have a "Ice Off" button on the control panel that disables the ice maker. You may have accidentally switched off your ice maker while pressing other buttons. Some ice makers have a switch on the side of the mechanism inside the freezer that regulates production.
- 2). Turn down the temperature in the freezer compartment; warm air could be suppressing ice production. Freezer compartments should be around -2 degrees Fahrenheit for best food storage and ice production conditions. Buttons on the control panel or a dial inside the freezer adjust the temperature.
- 3). Test the water dispenser, if your refrigerator has one. Problems with the water supply may interrupt the ice maker. Move the appliance away from the wall and ensure the supply hose is kink-free and verify that the shutoff valve is in the "On" position. Make sure the refrigerator doesn't stand on the hose when you move it back in place.
- 4). Look into the ice bucket inside the freezer to be sure it is free of foreign objects. Some models shut off production when a metal or plastic arm senses the bucket is full. Ensure the arm is free to move and no large chunks of ice have frozen to the bucket or arm.
