How Much of a Tip to Give?
- When tipping at a restaurant, you may need to factor in more than just the server and the total bill. If you had good service and one server, most tipping etiquette says you should tip around 15%. If you had additional servers such as a wine server or bartender, you may want to add in extra.
When getting delivery, it is common to tip between 5% to 10% depending on the order and prep. If you are tipping for a business lunch, you may want to add extra depending on the amount of set-up or additional preparation or task the delivery person had to do. - If you out for a drink, you will want to tip roughly the same amount to bartenders as in a restaurant, abound 10% to 15% of your bill. You may want to find out if the servers and bartenders split tips, so you don't have to tip each individual.
Cab drivers and shuttles usually follow a 15% to 18% tipping schedule. The normal amount can vary based on service and location. - Tipping your stylist can be your choice, depending on the arrangement with their salon. Some stylists rent their chairs, meaning their entire fee goes to them. Etiquette would suggest you tip them on a sliding scale, based on the ownership, between 5% and 15%.
You may offer a tip to include nail technicians, colorists and shampoo technicians.
Hotel tipping is normally based on extended stays. Housekeeping and concierge services receive an as-used tip based on services rendered. A general guideline is 5% to 10% for maid service over five days. Concierge services can be based on the service and difficulty, so use your best judgment. - Other people you may tip include casino employees, bag attendants at the airport, body artists and others at your discretion.
As a general rule 10% or $5 to $10 is normal, depending on what you feel the service is worth. - Remember that if you are using a coupon or other discount, you will want to tip based on the full amount before the discounts are applied.
Tipping can vary in foreign countries, so check before you travel.
Service is what tipping is all about. If your service was poor, base your tip amount on your experience.
