How to Make a Separate Bedroom in a Studio

Measure the area beforehand and do some space planning. If you regularly host dinners and parties, you'll need a larger living and dining space, which will subtract from bedroom space. If you want a combination bedroom and home office, you will need a larger bedroom space. Also consider what size furniture will be used, where the windows are located and how best provide for flow of traffic. Thinking about such factors will help you determine the best way to separate your bedroom. - 2

Next, divide the bedroom from the rest of the apartment. Let the desired privacy be your guide. For complete separation, use something that completely blocks the bedroom from view: an opaque hanging curtain, folding screen or a wall of furniture such as an entertainment center or a couple of closed-back bookcases. For a more open option, try open-back bookcases, a curtain of beads or see-through material or a row of potted trees or plants. - 3

Lastly, furnish your separated bedroom. If there's room for all your bedroom furniture, use it; but if there's too much and the space feels and looks crowded, you may need to pare down. Try using only one nightstand instead of two, or relocating that decorative trunk. Consider small-furniture options: use a stool, folding chair or rocking chair instead of a bulky armchair, a wall-mounted mirror instead of a vanity and a wall mounted flatscreen instead of a traditional TV.
