Plant seeds in trays filled with dry potting soil. The seeds need sunlight, so do not place the seeds any deeper than ¼ inch. - 2). Thoroughly water the seeds when the tray is full. This is the only time you will completely drench the soil. After this initial watering, allow the soil to become dry to the touch before watering again, and then water just enough to moisten the soil.
- 3). Place the tray in an area where the seeds can receive full sunlight.
- 4). Transfer the seedlings to 4-inch pots when they have spouted two to four leaves. They should reach this stage two to three weeks after planting.
- 5). Water sparingly, when the soil feels dry to touch.
- 6). Transfer plants to larger pots as needed. When the roots are easily visible or growing through the drainage hole, it is time for a larger pot.
- 7). Keep the plants potted for six months to a year before transferring them to a garden bed. The best time to do this is in the fall.
- 8). Choose a planting area that will receive full sun and offers soil with good drainage. Do not plant them in an area where the soil is marshy. A sloped area is ideal, though not necessary.
- 9). Prepare the soil by breaking it up as it much as possible. You want a very fine, loose soil. Adding garden gravel to the bottom of the soil bed will help ensure good drainage. Over exposure to dampness will cause the roots to mold and die.

Plant the seedlings deep enough to completely cover the root ball, and space them 18 inches apart. Pack soil firmly around the stem of the plant. - 11
