Landscape Lighting Training

    Types

    • A landscape lighter may have to install lighting in residential, commercial or industrial locations, so training covers these three areas. With these three locations comes training in the installation of different light sizes and methods of installation. A training course can be online or in person.

    Features

    • Within the three types of locations--residential, commercial and industrial--there are five essential training features: design layout and applicability of lighting; types of lighting; designing patterns and methods; location analysis (which is done in conjunction with layout and applicability); and design application. The training of each feature is different for the location. An industrial location could require larger, or brighter, lights. Patterns that work for a residential walkway might not work for an office building.

    Time Frame

    • For an online training course, the amount of time required for completion depends on the materials offered and personal preference. Philips Hadco's online course offers classes ranging from 30 minutes to three hours, comprised of video and audio tutorials. Other companies, such as Landscape Online or Cast Lighting, offer in-person, hands-on training that covers one day, about eight hours, of tutorials.

    Cost

    • The minimum fee for a one-day tutorial as of 2010 ranges from $50 to $250. The price is determined by what type of light the training session uses. Low-voltage light training occupies the low end of the price scale, high voltage would be the mid-range and LED installation is the most expensive.

    Considerations

    • The majority of training companies and sites offer instruction for residential installation. Commercial and industrial training, although offered by Philips Hadco, can also be provided on the job site. In this case, prior installation experience or knowledge is required, which can come from residential training.
