How Do I Clean a Brick Driveway?
- 1). Lay down kitty litter or fine sawdust to soak up as much oil from an oil stain as possible. Remove the kitty litter in about two or three days and dispose of it at a local landfill that accepts hazardous waste.
- 2). Clean stubborn oil stains with liquid laundry detergent, grease-removing dish detergent or an automotive degreasing product sold in automotive stores. If you use dry laundry detergent, wet the driveway first. Scrub the stain with a stiff nylon brush or deck brush and let it sit for about four hours. Rinse the driveway with your hose or with buckets of hot water. Alternatively, soak the oil and soap with kitty litter (or sawdust) if you don't want to rinse it into your landscape.
- 3). Clean tire marks with an automatic brake cleaner until the marks dissipate. Test in an inconspicuous spot first. Rinse clean or soak the cleaner up with kitty litter and dispose.
- 4). Power-wash your driveway in even, sweeping motions. This is an excellent way to get off ground-in dirt and bird droppings. Use power-washing as a follow-up to other stain-removal methods, as well. Hold the power washer farther away from the bricks if you turn up the pressure. Adhere to the instructions on the power washer, using a recommended, biodegradable cleaning solution, and test in an inconspicuous area, on the lowest setting first, prior to going full force on your driveway, especially if your brick is old and the mortar is in bad shape.
