How to Make Hanging Eyeballs
- 1). Prep the ping pong ball. Sand the ball completely to create a rough surface to hold paint and smooth away the seams. Clean off all dust from ball with a damp paper towel. Pat dry.
- 2). Set up the ping pong ball and wire hanger for painting. Hold the ball in your hand and pierce it with a needle. Press the nail point into the hole and wiggle it until it widens enough to allow the body of the nail through. Bend the hook and neck of the wire hanger toward the bottom end of the hanger into a 90-degree angle. Place the triangular bottom of the hanger on a table and straighten the hanger's
hook so the end points up. If the hanger falls, then bend the neck more until it is stable. Push the ping pong ball onto the top of the hanger through the nail hole. - 3). Squeeze a tiny amount of blue acrylic paint on to the paper plate and lightly dip the end of the ear plug into the paint. Hold the hanger and ball in one hand and press the paint-laden end of the ear plug directly into the center of the ball to create the iris. Blow-dry the painted iris with the hair dryer.
- 4). Squeeze a tiny amount of black acrylic paint on to the paper plate. Dip the small artist's brush into the black paint and paint a tiny circle at the center of the blue iris to form a pupil. Blow-dry the painted pupil with the hair dryer.
- 5). Squeeze out the red acrylic paint onto the second plastic lid. Crumple some toilet paper and dip it into the red paint. Wipe the excess red paint off on newspaper. Hold the eyeball with the pupil facing away from you and very lightly brush with the toilet paper covered with red paint from the back toward the pupil. Make the strokes lighter as you paint the front.
- 6). Cut a piece of string 6 inches long. Drag the string through the red paint and wipe off excess paint. Hold one end of the string then lay and drag the string over the eyeball with multiple times. This creates larger blood vessels. Blow dry.
- 7). Place the hanger and eyeball on the newspapers. Spray the entire eyeball with clear coat spray paint from a 6- to 8-inch distance to prevent drips. Blow dry, then apply a second coat. This seals the eyeball.
- 8). Create the eyeball tendons and connect them to the eyeball. Lay the mirror glass side up on a table. Cut three pieces of string 6 inches long. Pour a teaspoon of white liquid latex on to the mirror
and place the ends of the three pieces of string into the wet latex. Add a few drops of white liquid latex on top of the string and place the back of the eyeball into the wet latex. Pinch the three strings together to straighten them without dislodging them from the latex. Pour 1/4 cup flesh-colored latex into an empty plastic container. Carefully pour the flesh-colored latex in a line over the string
starting from the white latex. - 9). Create the latex flesh patch to cover your eye. Pour out 1/2 cup of flesh-colored latex at the end of the string and latex line, opposite from the eyeball. Allow it to spread into a circle large enough to
cover your eye socket. Drip drops of red liquid latex from the eyeball along the string and to the eye patch. Spread the red around with a toothpick to create a bloodied look throughout the hanging
eyeball prosthetic. Allow to dry overnight. Powder both sides when dry.
