List of Foods That Have High Fructose Corn Syrup
- High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sugar made from cornstarch. It is heavily used in processed foods. HFCS can be found in hundreds of foods, such as breads, cookies, crackers, juice drinks and sodas, and dairy products. Even some cough syrups contain HFCS. The issue of how healthy HFCS is for our bodies is highly debated. Some studies suggest a link between HFCS consumption and obesity. Other studies suggest the effects of HFCS on the body are no different than that of other sugars.
- High fructose corn syrup is made by changing the sugar found in cornstarch (glucose) into another form of sugar called fructose. HFCS extends the shelf life of foods and costs less than sugar.
- Research regarding the link between eating processed foods containing HFCS and obesity shows conflicting results. The American Medical Association has stated that HFCS does not contribute to obesity any more than any other sweetener. However, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, in an April 2004 issue, noted a correlation between the consumption of HFCS and rising obesity rates in the United States.
