How to Build a Tiki Bar in a Weekend

If you want to feel like you're on a tropical island any time of the year, there's no better way than to build your own home tiki bar.
A tiki bar will give you and your friends a unique, comfortable place to hang-out and enjoy a few cocktails even if it's icy cold outside.
Best of all, you can build your own custom bar in a weekend.
A tiki, or Polynesian, style bar can range from very simple to incredibly detailed.
Some will be just a simple flat surface that is decorated to fit the tiki theme.
At the other end of the spectrum are full-blown bars with sinks, plumbing, custom cabinets, and of course lots of tiki themed details.
A complicated design will take far more than a weekend for a home hobbyist to make, so we'll start with a simpler design.
To start, you will want a nice, solid table or a simple pre-made home bar.
If you select a table, the initial cost will be lower, but your tiki bar will not be at a "bar" height and may not have the feeling that you're striving for.
Some home stores have relatively inexpensive bar furniture for sale which are at the correct height, but will cost more initially.
Your best bet is to wander around your local home store and see what your options are.
Don't rush or be cheap, because the table or bar you select will be the foundation for your entire Polynesian-inspired creation.
Next, go by your local craft supply store.
Here, you're going to want to grab some decorative bamboo poles to construct the roof of the tiki hut from.
You will also want to grab some bamboo of various sizes for decorating the bar or table, and for concealing the table legs or other non-tiki themed items.
While you're in the craft store, look at the artificial plant section and grab some greenery and flowers to help complete the tropical feeling of your ideal, relaxing paradise.
You'll want to order tiki grass thatch - and lots of it.
This thatch is the decorative leaves and grass which is commonly used to cover the bottom of a tropical-themed bar and also to create the thatch roof.
Grass thatch is inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to work with.
Once you have your supplies, you can begin creating your personal paradise.
Carefully use a hot glue gun to apply the grass thatch around the bar's base.
Hot glue can also be used to stick the decorative bamboo onto the corners, edges, and table legs.
Be creative and always keep your goal in mind - you want to build a relaxing, interesting, unique tiki bar to enjoy tropical drinks at with your friends.
