How to Make a Headboard With Shutters
- 1). Sand the shutters lightly, then prime and paint them as desired. For a coastal bedroom, teal or white complements a room, or you can leave them alone if you want a shabby chic or country-style headboard.
- 2). Lay the panels face down on plastic sheeting or newspaper, and line them up side by side. You will need three to four panels, depending on the width of the mattress.
- 3). Install hinges approximately 3 inches from the top and bottom of the shutter panels, directly over the connecting joints, using a drill and the provided screws. For example, with three shutter panels, you'll need four hinges to connect them together --- one panel in the middle, four hinges connecting either side to the main panel.
- 4). Measure the length of the shutters, and then transfer those measurements onto the wall with a faint pencil mark to serve as a guideline for the mounting brackets. Include an additional inch to the measurements to accommodate the placement of the mounting brackets on the backside of the shutters.
- 5). Drill the mounting bracket holes in the wall, along the pencil guidelines you made in Step 4. Space the brackets to coincide with the width measurements of the headboard.
- 6). Attach the mounting brackets to the backside corners of the headboard, 1 inch from the top edge, using a drill. Slide the headboard brackets onto the wall brackets to secure them. Use a level to make sure they are even. Adjust the brackets on the headboard as necessary.
