How to Sweep a Floor

    • 1). Remove any light objects from the area that needs to be cleaned, such as shoes, rugs and chairs.

    • 2). Position the broom in a corner of the room. Hold the broom upright and then tip it 45 degrees to the side.

    • 3). Grasp the broom with both hands, placing one hand 12 inches below the top of the broom and the other hand six inches below the first. Adjust your hand position until the broom feels comfortable to hold.

    • 4). Pull the broom along the floor in a three foot path from the corner, where the floor meets the wall. Press down slightly as you pull the broom to collect particles from the floor.

    • 5). Lift the broom and reposition it against the starting wall then repeat the sweeping motion, overlapping the first path by three inches.

    • 6). Repeat the process until you reach the end of the wall. Return to your beginning wall and sweep another three feet at a time until you've swept the entire floor. The accumulated dirt pile shifts into one area with each pass of the floor you make.

    • 7). Move your broom along the parameters of the walls to catch any dirt and dust that may cling to the walls and corners.

    • 8). Pick up the accumulated dirt and dust by sweeping it into a dust pan.
