How to Install a Pet Door in Exterior Garage Doors

    • 1). Place the pet door face down on a table to expose the insert lip. Measure the lip with a tape measure.

    • 2). Draw a cutting template line on the garage door the same size as the insert lip on the pet door. Stick tape around the edges of the drawn line to make a highly visible template.

    • 3). Put on safety glasses and drill pilot holes inside the tape template on each corner.

    • 4). Insert a jig saw blade into one of the four pilot holes and saw out the section of the door, following the tape template.

    • 5). Open the door and straddle it while squatting down. Insert the interior door face into the interior side of the door. Insert the exterior face into the exterior side. Push the two sides together; some model pet doors will snap together while others will not.

    • 6). Secure the pet door to the garage door by inserting retaining screws into the four corners of the door where the pre-drilled holes appear, using a screw gun.

    • 7). Spread a bead of caulk around the exterior edges of the pet door with a caulk gun to seal it and keep weather elements from seeping in.
