Heart-Shaped Music Box

• This can be a simple hollow heart-shaped box or you can carve two or more compartments out for jewelry. Carve a hollow opening in the bottom to store the music movement mechanism and fit in the key. The music is the most important part of this box, and after it's carved and sanded down, and you've attached the lid with simple hinges, you can choose the type of music and the way the music plays through the box. Some craft stores offer voice recordings, and most offer wind-up music mechanisms that come with a key. You have the choice of hundreds of songs to choose from.
  
  

Hinged Band-Saw Box

• This style heart-shaped box is meant to be simple, but with a hinged lid that closes horizontally over the piece rather than vertically. Carve out a simple heart shape, cut it in half horizontally so the lid fits perfectly, and hollow it out. Once your heart has been sanded completely smooth, drill into the upper corner of your heart pieces, and insert a brass rod as a hinge. The simple design of this heart with the different design of the hinged lid makes it a unique, useful and thoughtful gift.
  
  

Classic Jewelry Box

• The simple jewelry box is similar to the hinged band-saw box except, instead of the hinged lid, this jewelry box has a lid that fits perfectly over it without any hinges. To do this, cut 1/4-inch into the outer portion of the bottom sides and 1/4-inch into the inner portion of the upper sides, assuming the width of the sides of your box are 1/2-inch. Your box then fits together perfectly and can be painted for a special touch.
  
  

Picture Frame Box

• If the box you are giving is for a special occasion like a wedding or an anniversary, you may want to add a picture as a keepsake. The easiest way to do this is to cut out the top-center of your box slightly smaller than the dimensions of your picture. Install a cardboard piece at the bottom of your lid to slide your picture into. Laminate your picture so it won't get damaged, then slide it between the cardboard and the wood. You then see your special picture through the lid of the box.
