Benefits of Blue Green Algae
- Phycocyanin, the blue pigment in this algae, is a powerful antioxidant for free radical scavenging, according to a 2004 review of studies in "Life Sciences" journal (see link in Resources). This makes blue-green algae a great immune system booster.
- A study in a Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications issue from 2000 (also cited in the "Life Sciences" review)also noted that phycocyanin inhibits the growth of certain cancer cells.
- Additionally, free radicals are indicated to be partially responsible for negative effects of aging, according to the Mayo Clinic (see link in Resources). The action of blue-green algae against free radicals is of benefit here also.
- Phycocyanin reduces inflammation, according to a study published in a 2007 issue of "Life Sciences." Other anti-inflammatory substances in blue-green algae include beta carotene, lycopene and lutein.
- Blue-green algae are a concentrated source of chlorophyll, the green pigment, which is recognized for its regenerating and immune-enhancing properties.
