Troubleshooting a Maytag Washer Machine Timer
Getting to the Timer
Begin by unplugging the Maytag washer machine so you don't get shocked. The knobs on the control panel should all be removable, either a pull-and-twist or a screw variety. Remove them all and slide out the flat face panel. A series of wires should be visible, sticking out from where the time selector knob was placed. They should all be connected like headphone jack cords to the machine's circuit board. Use a set of needle-nose pliers to make sure they're all snug in their jacks. Don't use your hands, as you don't want to leave the oil from your fingers on the wires or the circuit board.
Testing the Timer
Testing the timer will require a volt/ohm meter with alligator clips. There should be two leads running from the timer which supply it with power. Disconnect these leads and connect them to the volt/ohm meter. Set the meter to the RX1 setting. The meter should read zero. If it does not, then there's a fault within the wires of the timer and it must be replaced.
Replacing the Timer
If the timer is faulty, it's best to replace it. Before disconnecting the wires leading to the machine from the old timer, make a diagram or note of which wires go where. Unscrew the mounting nuts surrounding the timer, disconnect the wires, and remove the old timer. Fit the new timer into the exact same spot as the old one, screw it into place, and use your diagram to reconnect the wires correctly. Remember not to touch the wires or surrounding machine's components with your hands.
