This Halloween season, you don't have to spend tons of money or time on an elaborate costume for your child. There are several simple costume ideas that are easy to make, require few materials and don't cost a lot of money. Here are a few options for both girls and boys. - You can put together a construction worker costume for your child in about an hour, according to the Disney FamilyFun website. It requires an old flannel shirt, a white long-sleeved shirt, jeans, tool belt, tools, face paint, gloves and a hard hat. First, cut the sleeves off the flannel shirt. Then have your child wear the flannel shirt over the white long-sleeved shirt. Add a tool belt around your child's jeans and smudge your child's face with brown face paint. Finish the costume by giving your child some hand tools, a pair of gloves and a hard hat.
- Turning your child into a wrapped present requires only a few steps. First, find an old shipping box and cover it with colorful wrapping paper. Then, make holes at the top and side of the box for your child's head and hands. For extra touches, add a bow on the box and put matching ribbons in your child's hair.
- For a farmer's costume, gather a pair of overalls, a plaid flannel shirt, a pair of boots and a straw hat. Place a red bandanna around your child's neck and add freckles to his or her face using orange face paint, as recommended by the website All Free Crafts. For younger children, you can wheel your kid around Halloween night in a wagon filled with straw and stuffed farm animals.
- If you are looking for a last-minute costume for your son, turn him into Clark Kent. This costume simply requires a Superman T-shirt, a white button-down shirt, casual pants, a tie and a pair of drugstore glasses. Leave the white shirt partially unbuttoned so that the Superman t-shirt will show through. Remember to pop out the lenses in the glasses before letting your child wear them.
- Turn your son or daughter into a chef for Halloween. First, purchase an oversized white sweatshirt to turn into a chef's jacket. The website Quick and Simple recommends cutting two one-and-a-half inch slits down the front collar of the sweatshirt. Then, fold in and glue down the cut pieces to make a chef's collar. Glue white buttons down the front of the sweatshirt and add a line using a thin permanent marker to imitate where the coat's edge would be. Finish the costume off by having your child wear casual pants, an oven mitt and a white chef's hat.
