Lid Isn't Closed

• On certain GE washer models, you must put the lid down for the machine to fill with water. Although the motor might turn on and the washer might sound as though it's working, the washer won't fill with water until you actually shut the lid. Close the lid and listen for the machine to start filling.
  
  

Faulty Lid Switch

• If the lid is closed and water still doesn't flow into the machine, the lid switch might have broken. The lid switch is a safety device located on the inside lid panel. Once closed, it locks the lid in place to prevent you from opening it while the washer is on. Move your finger over the lid switch, and listen for a clicking sound. Replace the switch when no clicking sound is heard.
  
  

Water Not Connected or on

• Most GE washing machines have two separate hoses: one for cold and another for hot water in the back of the appliance. Each hose usually has its own water supply valve that allows water to flow through the hose when the washer is turned on. Ensure that each hose is securely connected to the machine and that each valve is turned on. One or both of the valves may have failed, which could cause the machine to begin the wash cycle without water inside.
  
  

Bad Sensor

• GE washing machines operate with the help of sensors that are regulated by the machine's control panel. After you select the water temperature and wash setting, the control panel alerts various components on the machine to perform. If a sensor inside the control panel goes bad, it might initiate the wrong commands or send signals in the wrong order. As a result, the washer might start washing laundry before the machine fills with water. Contact a washing machine repair technician to test the control panel sensors to ensure they're each functioning properly.
  
  

Defective Water Inlet Valve

• The water inlet valve inside the washer that allows water to fill the tub may have failed. When this occurs, the washing machine might alert the water inlet valve to open and, after a period of time, automatically begins to run, assuming the water has filled the tub. Contact a washing machine repair technician to examine the water inlet valve and change it out with a new one if it has malfunctioned.
