How to Rig Up Live Bait Rigs for Cobia
- 1). Place a sliding-egg weight on your main line, followed by a glass or plastic bead. Use a 1 oz. or heavier weight when Cobia are feeding deep in the water. Inflate a party balloon to the size of a softball. Tie it to the line as a float if Cobia are feeding on or near the surface.
- 2). Attach a barrel swivel to the end of the main line with a Uni knot. Moisten the knot, and pull it down securely against the eye of the swivel.
- 3). Cut a 6-foot length of 60-lb.-test fluorocarbon line from a filler spool. Use this line as a leader.
- 4). Tie one end of the leader to the barrel swivel with a Uni knot.
- 5). Tie a No. 8/0 circle or baitholder hook to the end of the leader with a Uni knot. Choose a traditional baitholder hook for use with live bait. A circle hook increases the chances of a lip hook, and a safer catch and release of the Cobia.
- 6). Place a live bait such as eel, mullet, croaker or pin fish on the baitholder or circle hook. Position the bait securely on the hook. The point must be near the skin of the bait fish, but buried deep enough so as to not be instantly detected by the feeding Cobia.
