How to Build a Chalkboard Wall
- 1). Measure the area you want to make into a chalkboard. Decide if you want the chalkboard to cover the whole wall top to bottom or just a large section of the wall.
- 2). Apply painter’s tape to the outside edges of the area you want to be the chalkboard.
- 3). Wash the wall with a mixture of water and a mild cleanser -- such as dish soap -- to remove any surface dirt or oils. Allow the wall to dry completely.
- 4). Paint two coats of primer over the area, allowing each coat to dry completely.
- 5). Apply three to five coats of the chalkboard paint to the area, allowing ample time between coats for drying.
- 6). Put the side of a piece of chalk against the chalkboard and rub the entire surface of the chalkboard with the chalk. Erase the chalk from the board with a cloth.
- 7). Remove the painter’s tape from the border of the chalkboard carefully.
- 1). Measure the outside width and height of the chalkboard area. Cut two pieces of molding to each of these measurements, plus 2 inches.
- 2). Use the table saw to cut each end to a 45 degree angle to make a perfect square edge with the molding.
- 3). Sand and paint the molding as desired.
- 4). Place the molding on the wall so the edges line up with the chalkboard area and attach the molding with finishing nails every 3 inches.
