Knitting Directions for a Tote Bag
- 1). Cast on 50 stitches onto your needles.
- 2). Purl (knit every row) for the first five rows.
- 3). Continue in stockinette stitch (knit the right side row, purl the wrong side row), until piece measures approximately 25 inches from the cast-on edge.
- 4). Purl five rows, then cast off loosely. This forms the body of the bag.
- 5). Fold the body in half with the right sides facing. Thread some yarn through a blunt darning needle and use a mattress stitch to sew up the sides.
- 6). Thread any dangling yarn ends into the darning needle and weave them into the knitted fabric to hide. Trim with scissors.
- 7). Turn right side out and set aside.
- 8). Pick up knitting needles and cast on eight stitches.
- 9). Purl every row, knitting a strip. This strip will form the tote's handle.

Continue purling until the strap is approximately 12 inches long, then cast off loosely. - 11
Thread the darning needle with a length of yarn. Sew one side of the strap to one side of the tote body, about 1 inch from the top. Knot tightly, weave in all ends with darning needle, and clip with scissors. - 12
Make another strap, sew to opposite side of tote.
