Cooking is an important skill for both boys and girls to learn, and it can also be a lot of fun. If you just feel that urge to cook and it's not dinner time yet, there's nothing stopping you: here are some fun cooking video games for both boys and girls that will polish skills, entertain, and maybe even teach you new recipes. Most of the games, like the classic "Cooking Mama" that started it all, are for the Nintendo DS, but there are also some games for the PC and Mac.

    Cooking Mama

    • This series of cooking games for the Nintendo DS and Wii star the player as a hard working cartoon mother who is cooking dinner for her family, but that's no reason boys can't play, too. In the Nintendo DS version, players use the stylus pen and the touch screen to mimic the motions of preparing dishes. For example, to slice a cucumber, the player moves the stylus up and down over the length of the cucumber. Some of the latter games in the series allow multiple players to cook together, racing to see who can make the best tasting dishes the fastest.

    Cooking Academy

    • Cooking Academy are two games for the PC and Mac that places the player as a student at a prestigious culinary academy. Players must learn 50 recipes in order to pass each game, with the sequel specializing in ethnic dishes from Japan, Mexico, and Italy. Completing dishes means mastering a variety of mini games, memorizing the recipes, and timing everything so that nothing gets cold while you are busy working with other tasks.

    Imagine Master Chef

    • Imagine Master Chef is a Nintendo DS game about a girl named Rachel learning to cook so she can prepare a special dinner for her father when he returns home from a long business trip. Along the way, she takes cooking lessons from her favorite celebrity chef and her stuffed animal friends, especially Hopper, her stuffed toy rabbit. Players use simple motions with the stylus to cut vegetables, pour ketchup, and performs other cooking tasks. If you ever get lost, Rachel will always be in the DS's top screen to give advice.

    What's Cooking with Jamie Oliver

    • What's Cooking with Jamie Oliver is a cooking game for the Nintendo DS in which the player can read and cook real recipes from chef Jamie Oliver. There are one hundred recipes in the game, and players can search specifically for recipes according to the cuisine style, special diet needs, or cooking time. All recipes are accurate, and the game even includes features that allow the player to build a shopping list for recipes they would like to try and take their DS to the store to buy the ingredients needed. Players can even create their own recipes and use the Nintendo DS's wireless capabilities to share them with friends.
