The most important consideration in choosing hair color is not the overall lightness or darkness of your skin, but the underlying tone of your complexion. Tone is used to describe the coolness or warmth of a particular color. Skin tones range from ruddy warm to almost blue-cool, and these variations are quite evident in fair-skinned individuals. The best choice of hair color is one that fully complements, rather than contrasts with, your natural shade of skin. In many cases, the most flattering hair color is your natural color. - People with warm skin tones have a yellowish, peachy, or reddish cast to their skin. They tend to look good in warm, earthy colors and gold jewelry. One way to tell if your fair skin is on the warm side of the spectrum is to look at the veins on the inside of your forearms. If they have a greenish, rather than blue tinge, you have warm skin. Because hair color should complement skin tone, warm-skinned people should choose colors such as golden blond, auburn, and rich, deep browns. All warm hair colors have a golden, yellow, or amber cast, and include most shades of red hair. People with warm skin tones should avoid ash blonds and browns. Placing these cooler hair colors next to a warm complexion makes the skin look washed-out and unhealthy.
- People with cool skin tones have a pinkish, bluish, or purplish tone to their skin. They look best wearing cool colors such as blue, green, and purple, and prefer silver jewelry. The veins along the inside of the forearm in a cool-skinned individual will look blue instead of green. Complementary hair colors for cooler skin tones include beige and ash blonds, cooler chocolate browns, and some dark shades of red that are considered cool, such as burgundy. However, the darker, near-black shades along the cool spectrum are not recommended for people with extremely fair skin, because this is too much of a contrast in color. Cool hair colors lack the golden undertones of the warmer colors, and this difference is evident when comparing color samples side by side. Cool-skinned people should avoid warm hair colors for the same reason warm-skinned should avoid cool colors--it makes the complexion appear tired and dull.
- Often, the most complementary hair color will be the one you had as a child. Look back at old photographs for color ideas to take to your hairdresser. Eye color is another factor to consider when choosing the color of your hair. People with fair skin and blue eyes usually look great with blond hair, while fair-skinned, brown-eyed people fare better with darker hair coloring.
