    • Because many people do not consider renter's insurance a necessity, it is imperative that you present its benefits in such a way that your clients see the true value. When you talk to potential customers, ask them to do a mental inventory of their home and calculate how much it would cost to replace everything inside. Most people will quickly realize that it is not affordable to do so.

      Many renters don't want to pay the monthly premium for insurance because they assume their property is covered by their landlord's insurance policy. Take the time to explain to your customers that their landlord's policy probably only covers the physical structure of the apartment and the outside of the building.

      Renters often assume that an insurance policy is going to cost them more than it is worth; however most policies only cost between $15 and $30 per month.

    Marketing Methods

    • Many apartments now require tenants to hold a minimum amount of renter's insurance. Find the apartment complexes in your area with these requirements and build relationships with the staff. See if you can leave business cards or flyers in their leasing office and ask them to recommend your services to new tenants.

      If permissible, leave flyers that explain the benefits and average cost of renter's insurance on the door of apartment units in your area. Make sure the information is presented in a professional manner and include your contact information on the flyer.

      Find websites and blogs that help people locate a new apartment or find a moving service and advertise your insurance policies with them.

      Ask apartment locators and movers if you can leave flyers or business cards at their office for customers; offer to refer business their way in return for the opportunity.

      Ask your friends to tell at least five people they know about your business and about the benefits of a renter's insurance policy.

      Appeal to people you know who may work from home and have valuable office equipment, or people who have a lot of expensive gear at home for their hobbies or interests.

      Talk to people everywhere you go about the policies you offer. Give people free tips on how to minimize risk but also help customers to realize that for a considerably small amount of money per month, they can protect themselves from the devastation of losing valuable items without the ability to replace them.
