Lookin at Lucky
Lookin at Lucky
April 28, 2010
The weather finally cooperated on Wednesday, allowing the track to dry out to "good" during training hours after several days of rain with Derby contenders postponing works to avoid the muddy conditions.
Lookin at Lucky is the 3-1 morning line favorite for the Kentucky Derby but drew post 1. Regular rider Garrett Gomez retains the mount on Saturday for trainer Bob Baffert, and the blinkers will be off.
Owner Mike Pegram said, "There no use in crying about it. All we've got to do is think positive. Real Quiet was buried down on the rail (No. 3) in '98 and he came through. It's all about position and I've got the best jockey. Garrett has been around there. He knows how to do it and we'll get there. I wasn't apprehensive because he's talented enough that he'll be able to run his race from anywhere."
Baffert added, "Nothing surprises me with this horse. He just can't catch a break. He's either inside or outside. If they hadn't changed the draw (to the traditional), I would have finally gotten the first pick after all those years. It is what it is. You can't worry about that."

Endorsement
April 28, 2010
Endorsement went out for a timed work on Wednesday, breezing 4f in 47 2/3 with trainer Shannon Ritter in the irons. His fractions were 12 2/5, 24 seconds, 35 3/5, and out in 1:00, 1:13 3/5, and 1:29. However he came back with a lateral condylar fracture in his right front ankle, forcing him to be scratched from the Derby just hours before entries were taken. He will go in for surgery Thursday and is expected to be out of action 3-4 months.
Homeboykris and Make Music for Me
April 28, 2010
Homeboykris breezed half a mile in 48 2/5, with splits of 11 4/5, 23 4/5, 35 3/5, and out 5f in 1:02 1/5. He drew post 19 in the Derby for trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., and is a 50-1 outsider on the morning line. Dutrow said, "I'd like to see him sit off the speed. I'm not looking for him to be forwardly placed. I usually don't tell riders what to do, but I am going to tell Dominguez that we don't want to be lying close.
We want him to finish up in the race. We figure our only chance is if our horse closes and runs big the last half mile. If he does, we'll be in pretty good shape. If he doesn't, then we'll know why."
Make Music for Me drew into the field after Endorsement was scratched, and is a 50-1 outsider in the Derby. He drew post 9 for trainer Alexis Barba, and will have Joel Rosario in the irons. Barba said, "It's perfect. I think I've asked for '10' and I got '9' so how much closer can you get? It's a good balanced post. Unfortunately the two favorites didn't draw too well, did they? The horse is doing fabulous. I'm sorry for the people who didn't make it. It's pretty tough place to be."
Sidney's Candy
April 28, 2010
Sidney's Candy who is the 5-1 second choice in the Derby morning line, drew the far outside 20 post with jockey Joe Talamo for trainer John Sadler. He went out for a gallop under exercise rider Lupillo Alferez.
Sadler said, "Not the best of draws. What can I say? At least you're outside and can see what's going on. It just shows you how tough it is. But what are you going to do? That's how it works.
You've just got to deal with what you've got and do the best you can with it."
American Lion
April 28, 2010
American Lion drew post 7 in the Derby. The 30-1 morning line longshot will be ridden by David Flores for trainer Eoin Harty. He worked 5f Monday in 1:02 3/5, walked the shedrow on Tuesday, and came out Wednesday for a gallop.
Trainer Eoin Harty said, "I'm quite happy. (The post) doesn't change the way the horse is going to run, one way or the other. Seven is a lucky number for me. Well Armed (also owned by WinStar and trained by Harty) was No.

Noble's Promise
April 28, 2010
Noble's Promise is 12-1 on the morning line for the Derby and drew post 3 for trainer Ken McPeek and jockey Willie Martinez. He worked 4f on Monday in 48 4/5, walked the shedrow Tuesday, and galloped Wednesday.
McPeek said, "I wanted to be inside the 12 post, nothing too far out, and I wanted to be inside both Dublin and Jackson Bend because both of those have a history of getting out.
So it worked out very well for us. The fact that the two horses drawn inside of us are both closers is even better. It's a real good set-up for us. I'm thrilled."
Dublin
April 28, 2010
Dublin was out galloping before the break. He drew post 17 and is 12-1 morning line. Terry Thompson gets the call on Saturday for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
Lukas said, "Great. I like it. Your draw is always in relation to where everybody else draws. Where the other horses are is more important probably that where you drew. That dictates your strategy. Certain horses that have certain styles are compromised by various positions.
This one complements us. We're very happy there. And I've been lucky out there, too."
Mission Impazible
April 28, 2010
Mission Impazible will break from post 14 on Saturday under jockey Rajiv Maragh for trainer Todd Pletcher. He is one of two horses at 20-1 on the morning line, and went out for a gallop under exercise rider Fernando Espinoza.
Pletcher said, "I went back and looked at some earlier Derbies and saw that General Challenge (Post No. 14 in 1999) got banged pretty good coming out of there, but for the most part that break is a good thing and allows a rider some room."
April 28, 2010
Dean's Kitten schooled in the paddock Wednesday afternoon between races. He drew post 8 and will have Robby Albarado in the irons Saturday.
Trainer Mike Maker said, "I think Dean's Kitten drew great. I didn't think post position would be as much of an issue for him. He's not a great big horse and he has a better chance of overcoming any problems he may encounter from there."
April 28, 2010
Stately Victor drew post 6 for trainer Mike Maker and will have regular rider Alan Garcia aboard. He schooled in the paddock with stablemate Dean's Kitten on Wednesday.
Maker said about the draw, "It's not terrible. It wouldn't have been my first choice. The main reason I wanted to be outside was just to try to stay out of trouble. Let him get in a rhythm and then get to freewheeling."
