How to Change Filter on Central Air Conditioning
- 1). Turn off the central air conditioner. The best way to turn off the system is to turn off the circuit breaker to the system in your home electrical panel.
- 2). Find the door to the air filter. There is a door on the return air duct near the air conditioning system. The door is narrow and usually has two rings for handles. Turn the rings counterclockwise to open the door. Some systems require removing the blower housing cover to access the filter. Simply lift the blower housing door on the face of the system and remove the door from the unit.
- 3). Pull the old filter out with your fingers. The side of the filter indicates what size filter to replace it with. Make sure that you use the correct size filter for your unit.
- 4). Slide the new filter into the door opening with the air flow arrow on the filter pointing in the correct direction. If the air flow is moving to the right, the arrow on the filter should be pointing to the right.
- 5). Close the door and turn the rings clockwise to lock the door shut. Turn on the circuit breaker to power the central air conditioning unit.
