How to Build a Screened Patio in the Backyard

    • 1). Dig out a square or rectangular area to place your patio if you do not already have an existing patio. Use a level to check the evenness of the area, and then dig the post holes for the patio cover. Dig the post holes at least 1 foot deep; place holes directly inside the square or rectangular area for new patios and directly outside for existing patios.

    • 2). Place the posts into the holes before pouring concrete into the holes to support the posts and to create the patio surface. Use 2-inch-by-4-inch boards to support the upright posts and to create a border for the patio to pour concrete.

    • 3). Dig at least six holes for posts, one at each corner and one in the middle of the two longest sides of the patio; use more for larger patios; place posts no further than 8 feet apart. Use a concrete straight edge to smooth the concrete and then allow the concrete to dry a couple of days.

    • 4). Mix concrete or have pre-mixed concrete poured in around the upright posts and into the shoveled-out area. You can also make a patio surface using patio or garden pavers or blocks. When using pavers or blocks, press the pieces closely together during installation and line the shoveled-out area with sheets of black plastic to prevent weeds and grass from growing up in the cracks between pavers and blocks.

    • 5). Place 2-inch-by-4-inch boards between the larger posts at both the top and bottom of the posts. The bottom 2-inch-by-4-inch boards you attach between the larger posts should sit directly on the ground or surface of the patio.

    • 6). Place 2-inch-by-4-inch boards at intervals between posts. Place the 2-inch-by-4-inch boards no more than 4 feet apart in between the posts. Do this on all sides and across the top of the patio area as well. Leave an opening for a screen door to be placed.

    • 7). Unroll and cut screen to fit the areas between the posts and 2-inch-by-4-inch boards. Use staples and a staple gun to secure the screen into place. Staples placed an inch apart will protect against insect intruders.
