Party Outfit Tips

    Occasion Appropriate

    • A formal occasion calls for something glamorous or classy.woman in pink satin dress image by Tracy Martinez from Fotolia.com

Select an outfit that is appropriate to the type of party you are attending. For example, formal galas require that you wear glamorous clothing, much like a prom or wedding reception. Casual parties have relaxed dress requirements, and semiformal parties fall in between the two, requiring comfortable but classy wear. Choosing an appropriate outfit for the party you're attending saves you from committing a party faux pas, such as showing up to a formal occasion in a denim skirt and sandals or a similar embarrassing situation. The style of the occasion also makes an impact on how trendy or sexy your party outfit is. Revealing dresses with plunging necklines and short hems often don't mix well with wedding parties and their ilk, but they do present well at champagne socials and other galas.

    Comfort & Wear

    • An outfit's ability to move with you is important when it comes to wearing it to parties.dancing jenny image by Earl Robbins from Fotolia.com

A party outfit should not only be attractive and flattering, but it should also be comfortable and long-lasting. Wearing breathable fabric that contains cotton and cotton blends allows you to dance and socialize without becoming uncomfortable. Wearing short dresses and skirts at a party involves extra care. Wearing Lycra body-hugging shorts beneath your outfit allows you to move freely without fear of exposing yourself while dancing or casually hanging out. Try on potential outfits and practice dancing and moving around freely in them in front of a mirror. If necessary, do this in front of a camera so you can see how the outfit moves with your body. This helps you determine the right party outfit to wear before finding out too late that you've chosen the wrong ensemble.

    Colors & Styles

    • A party outfit's appearance should accent your own natural beauty. For example, if you're a redhead, an outfit that incorporates different shades of green accentuates your hair color as well as your eyes if they're green or hazel. Brunettes look gorgeous in purple, navy blue and gray tones, and blondes look attractive in yellows, pinks and pastel colors. Your complexion also helps you determine how a party outfit looks on you. For example, if you have naturally pale, sallow skin, wearing bold colors helps offset this. Avoid beige and tans when you are very pale-skinned as well.
