How to Crochet a Cocoon for Dolls

    • 1). Measure the doll from the neck to the toes. Add 2 inches so the cocoon will be tight to the doll but will still fit if the yarn shrinks.

    • 2). Make a loop of yarn about the size of your baby fingernail. Make a knot at the end of the loop to hold it tight. Hold the loop in the thumb of one hand. Hold a piece of yarn still on the ball and place it over your index finger on the same hand. Use the other hand to hold the crochet hook.

    • 3). Pass the crochet hook through the loop of yarn. Pass it under the yarn on your index finger and move the hook around the back of the yarn, catching the yarn. Draw the yarn you have caught through the loop. Keep the new loop of yarn on the hook. You have made one stitch.

    • 4). Continue making stitches until you have a chain of stitches as long as the measurement from Step 1. When you have finished this chain, pass the crochet hook through the last loop of yarn on the chain and catch the yarn from the back again. This time, continue making stitches all the way back down the chain you have made until you reach the end.

    • 5). Measure the baby doll from the middle of its stomach, around the back of the doll to the middle of the stomach. Add 1 inch to these dimensions. This is how wide your cocoon should be.

Continue adding rows of single crochet stitches until you reach the desired width of the cocoon.

    • 6). Place the ribbon across the top of the cocoon. Fold 1/2 inch of the top of the cocoon over the top of the cocoon. Crochet through the bottom of the cocoon to the top, moving the crochet hook through the two holes, one on the main part of the cocoon and one on the part that you just flipped over. Do this all the way across the top of the cocoon until you have made a small pocket at the top for the ribbon.

    • 7). Stitch the cocoon together with crochet stitches. Place the cocoon on a table and fold it so it is a long tube. Press the edges of the tube together. Pass the crochet hook through the loop of yarn at the top of one side through the loop of yarn on the other side. Draw a loop of yarn from the skein through both sides of the cocoon. Repeat this motion, moving lengthways from one end of the cocoon to the other. When you get to the end of the cocoon, tie a double knot and cut the yarn.

    • 8). Place the doll in the cocoon and draw the top ribbon tight. Knot the ribbon in a single knot.
